Eve's Bum Rap!
I was asked to be in a show called "Love and Hate” at the Refuge Gallery. Since I'd been working with the life preservers I somehow wanted to incorporate them. I remember the idea of "love and hate" pissing me off!! It conjured up didactic notions of being - "things must be divided: men and women, good and bad, or black and white.” I dislike how these extremes limit! We live in a world where there is lots of gray, so I wanted to create a piece explores the absurdity and restrictiveness of such labels.
This piece pushed a lot of buttons! I was told by the curators that visitors would often switch the labels! Good for them!
